THIS WEEKS RECCOMENDATION - CHARLEY'S WAR

This book is a collection of the Charley's War series from the 70s. Set in WWI it is in the same format as numerous war comics but is in fact an intensely anti-war story, which is why it is set in WWI rather than the more popular WW2.

Pat Mills is intensely of the opinion that WW1 can be explained in terms of nasty upper classes & capitalists (an opinion I consider simplistic) which sometimes grates. Nonetheless it is a very powerful story with a decent & endearing hero & great attention to detail & the horror of that war, which is shown, is entirely truthful.

My favourite is the death of Lonely which involves a mixture of pathos & heroism which cheapens neither emotion.

First in a series. 14.99 + 1.00 P&P
